Put the HORSE before the CART!

The driving horse requires a specialized set of skills, quite different from those needed for riding. Driving requires of the horse a unique combination of independence and connection. He must confidently step out in front of you, respond reliably to your verbal cues from behind,  and keep his composure amid the unique sights, sounds, and pressures of harness work. The horse must manage not only his own body but also the load behind him, and maintain a balance between self-reliance and attentive responsiveness to his driver.

For many riders transitioning to driving, the challenges can be surprising. The nuanced differences in training and equipment often catch newcomers off guard. What works in the saddle doesn’t always translate directly to harness work, leaving many seasoned riders unsure of the steps needed or the right tools to use. Without clear guidance, it's easy to feel lost about where to begin, what gear is essential, how to use it, and where to find it.

The successful education of a capable driving partner calls for thoughtful, deliberate groundwork to build to physical and mental skills needed to excel in the job.

Without a clear roadmap, this journey can easily begin to feel overwhelming. The confusion about where to start and which steps to follow often leads to missed opportunities in training. But with the right guidance, you can overcome this uncertainty and confidently educate your horse in the essential skills required for driving success.
